Is Waist Training Actually Safe?

Weight lose can be a total pain in the ass! Reading nutrition labels, meal prep, calorie counting, it is exhausting. So it would only make sense that waist training is as popular as it is, with celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Amber Rose, and Kim Kardashian (post baby), posting major waist training selfies.

Yes, the thought of wearing a corset-like contraption for a few weeks to get a slimmer midsection sounds pretty damn good, but what is it doing for your health? The corset has been around for nearly 500 years, the whole reason women’s fashion has evolved so much is because who wanted to wear a contraption the squishes your lungs and ribs, making it almost impossible to breath. Come on ladies! According to Christopher Ochner, Ph.D., a weight loss and nutrition expert at Mount Sinai Hospital, women are actually passing out from wearing the device.

“Spot reducing doesn’t exist,” says Ochner. “You can’t reduce the collection of fat in any one particular area of your body. If you push your stomach in, all the fat will go right back to where it was no matter how long [you wear the corset] for.” Yes, some people can get away with wearing the waist trainer without any real harm done. But for a real, long-term weight-loss plan, you’re better off looking elsewhere.
