Trump is signalling his domestic opponents that he’s in for the long haul. After all, for the most part, Trump’s base couldn’t care less if the portion of government that’s been shuttered during this budget negotiation never reopens.
In fact, Team Trump, led by now Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney’s ambitious plan to merge duplicitous agencies, have been determined from the beginning to make government more efficient, more responsive, and less expensive.
The president simply refuses to back down from his demand for funding a significant physical barrier along the border with Mexico and that leaves new Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a dilemma – cave or let her constituents rot.
Just as importantly, Trump’s determined stance sends a message across the globe. This president doesn’t bluff.
Do not think for a second that China’s Xi Jinping isn’t taking notice of Trump’s willingness to withstand whatever political fallout he may incur in order to achieve victory for the American people.
