Rashida Tlaib: I’m Going To Hang ‘Altered’ American Flag Outside of My Office

OD ED: Sometimes I take a step back and think about weather or not I am being fair in my criticisms.

This story, for instance, made me stop and think.  There are a lot of people, Charlie Daniels being one of them, who believe that “This Ain’t No Rag It’s A Flag ….

This ain’t no rag, it’s a flag
And we don’t wear it on our heads
It’s a symbol of the land where the good guys live
Are you listening to what I said
You’re a coward and a fool
And you broke all of the rules
And you wounded our American pride
And now we’re coming with a gun
And we know you’re gonna run
But you can’t find no place to hide
We’re gonna hunt you down like a mad dog hound
Make you pay for the lives you stole
We’re all through talking and a messing around
And now it’s time to rock and roll

While I agree with respecting the flag, because to servicemen (and women) and women (who, IMHO, sign up for the right reasons but and too often end up being exploited by a corrupted command) this flag represents why their friends came home in boxes.

That being said, I defend, not support, an American’s right to burn the flag.  Yes, you heard that right, I agree with the Supreme Court that burning the American Flag is a form of political speech and while it is, in my opinion, in VERY poor taste, you have the right do it.  It’s important to remember just because you have the right to do something, it doesn’t mean it’s advisable to do so.  I have the right to drink a handle of scotch every night, but if I wanna live I wouldn’t advise it.

So, people on the right like to fly this flag:

Many people I know fly this flag, and in their mind they are honoring those who risk their own lives to protect the innocent.  However, I can see (I’m not saying I agree, but I can SEE WHY) someone may say this is ‘defacing’ the flag, as it has been materially changed in appearance.

Others fly this version:

Clearly, the Democrat Representatives actions are not without precedent.

However, life does not happen in a vacuum.  Most people who I have met with fly the flag honoring the police and law enforcement, do so out of respect and pride for our nation.

There is a difference, in my opinion, between someone flying a flag that is altered in order to honor a group of servicemen is different than a woman who is constantly deriding our nation, altering the flag outside her office in Congress.

I’m not suggesting that her flag, and her placing it outside her office is not Constitutionally protected, I just don’t think “it’s a good look” coming from someone who, IMHO, doesn’t seem to be a big fan our our nation.

The folks over at Conservative Tribune have a different take:

Now, Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib — as obnoxious as any other member of the progressive Democratic “squad” — is open to pretending there aren’t actually just 50 states in the union.

At a hearing Thursday of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to study “statehood” for the District of Columbia, Tlaib told D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser she wanted a flag with 51 stars to display outside her office, as a symbol of her support for upending one more aspect of the Constitution as the Framers devised it.

Tlaib’s exchange with Bowser came up because D.C. statehood advocates had the effrontery last week to display American flags with a 51st star — a mangling of Old Glory for political purposes that should have offended even liberals with a respect for reality.

“I would love one,” Tlaib said, according to Fox News. “I would love to hang it outside of my office.”

It didn’t make her a lot of fans.

One Twitter user noted:

Call me crazy, but I think the last thing we need is the center of government power, corruption ie, our kleptocracy getting a electoral votes.  On the other hand, are those citizens not taxed without representation in the general election?  It’s not an easy question, but you can bet on one thing, if DC was 90% Republican there is no way in hell that Talib would even be considering such a notion.
