Opinion | E.P. – U.S. Attorney General William Barr finds himself at the nexus of a Constitutional crisis that will determine, for the foreseeable future, whether our Republic endures or we descend into a post-Constitutional tyranny.
It’s a position he, like President Trump before him, chose.
As patriots await Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s report on FISA abuse and other things, and the findings of U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is investigating the origins of the three-year-long national spygate ‘hoax’, all eyes are on AG Barr.
History will either recall Bill Barr among the greatest of patriots, for eschewing a lifetime of friends in the interest of restoring Constitutional reverence, or as just another person who chose to do nothing when he could have saved our republic.
To achieve the restoration of America’s intelligence and justice agencies, Barr will be required to prosecute those he grew up with. That, and sufficient penalties to dissuade similar future criminal abuse of the powers of those agencies, will take brass-b*lls patriotism.
So, as we wait for this drama to unfold, it’s worth asking, what do we know about how our attorney general views his role in history?
A recent speech that Barr delivered to Notre Dame law students gives insight into the importance that he attaches to piety in understanding and executing his Constitutional responsibilities.
The belief that religion underpins our Constitutional moorings is something that Barr shares with James Madison, the man commonly credited as the Father of the Constitution.
Attorney General Barr: I won’t dwell on the new secular age. Suffice it to say that the campaign to destroy the traditional moral order has coincided and, I believe has brought with it immense suffering and misery.
And yet, the forces of secularism, ignoring these tragic results, press on with even greater militancy.
Among the militant progressives are many so-called ‘progressives’, but where is the progress?
We are told we are living in a post-Christian era, but what has replaced the Judeo-Christian moral system? What is it that can fill the spiritual void in the hearts of the individual person?
And what is the system of values that can sustain human social life? The fact is that no secular creed has emerged capable of fulfilling the role of religion.
For those patriots looking for someone to trust in, William Barr’s faith-based moral foundation puts him in the company of the Constitution’s Framers.
Along with his promise to determine the predicate used to spy on a presidential complaint (“it’s a big deal”), patriots have reason for hope that Barr will do what is necessary to discourage future criminal behavior of this kind.
