A protester was shot dead during a riot in Louisville, Kentucky. The metro police and the National Guard were trying to disperse the rioters when suddenly protesters opened fire on them. They returned fire, hitting and killing a man by the name of David McAtee.
Democratic Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said:
“Last night at around 12 a.m., it is our understanding that the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and the Kentucky National Guard were dispatched to 26th and Broadway. While working to disperse a crowd, LMPD [Louisville Metro Police Department] and the Kentucky National Guard were fired upon.”
Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad said:
“It has been a very difficult four days for our city. I think it’s very, very clear that many people do not trust the police. That is an issue that we’re going to have to work on and work through for a long time.”

According to WLKY, it is unclear if David McAtee, the man who reportedly died, was the person who fired at officers and police are currently interviewing witnesses.
“He didn’t hurt nobody, didn’t deserve to get shot down like he did,” McAtee’s sister said to WAVE 3 News. “I don’t know what happened, but whatever happened here, my brother didn’t do nothing wrong. He was an innocent person, and innocent bystander. He did not deserve this at all.”
She also said that the crowd gathered at the scene of the shooting did not relate to the protests, according to WAVE 3 News. McAtee’s sister claimed that the group meets outside of Yaya’s BBQ Shack next door to Dino’s Food Market every Sunday for food and music. David McAtee is reportedly the owner of Yaya’s BBQ Shack and was helping to serve food to the crowd.
