Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young defended hoodlums who toppled a statue of Christopher Columbus on Saturday and chucked it into the city’s Inner Harbor like a piece of trash.
Folks, this is an elected official charged with protecting the city. If this were the military he would be court marshaled for dereliction of duty. This is a shameful failure on the mayor’s part to fulfill the obligations of his office. It is his duty to enforce city laws, and he has not only failed to do so, but is contributing to the lawlessness by supporting the rioters.
Via spokesman Lester Davis, Young called the motion part of a “re-examination taking place nationally and globally around some of these monuments and statues that may represent different things to different people,” according to the Baltimore Sun.
So, you have a differing opinion from other people over a statue. What gives anyone the right to destroy it?
“We understand the frustrations,” Davis continued. “What the city wants to do is serve as a national model, particularly with how we’ve done with protesting. We’ve seen people who have taken to the streets, we have supported them. We are going to continue to support it. That’s a full stop.”
When Democrats make irresponsible statements like that they embolden more vandalism, more rioting, and more violence. Full stop.
I am so sick of hearing these cowardly politicians continue to call them protesters. When you topple a statue you are no longer a protester. You have graduated to a criminal or rioter.
Masked rioters, many clad in black to hide their identities, used a chain to pull the statue down while other nitwits cheered and fireworks exploded across the city to celebrate Independence Day. What a contrast.
The statue, situated near Little Italy and dedicated in 1984 by former President Ronald Reagan and former Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer, is the newest memorial to the Italian explorer, who discovered the New World for Europe in 1492, to be toppled by vandals as protests sparked by the death of George Floyd turned violent and have nothing to do with Floyd. The Marxist mayor just said so.
Last month, Columbus statues in Richmond, Virginia, and Boston, Massachusetts were brought down. The Richmond statue was set on fire and thrown into a lake.
The toppling of the statue was part of bigger, citywide riots, The Baltimore Sun reported:
“The Columbus statue was dragged down as people marched across the city Saturday demanding reallocation of funds from the police department to social services, a reassessment of the public education system, reparations for Black people, housing for the homeless, and the removal of all statues ‘honoring white supremacists, owners of enslaved people, perpetrators of genocide, and colonizers,’ according to a flyer.”

It wasn’t clear whether or not police had been ordered to stand down, which is customary for Democrats these days, who care nothing about people getting hurt, public property being destroyed, or local businesses being burned to the ground, as the statue was removed, but the mayor’s spokesman reportedly said police “are principally concerned with the preservation of life.”
“That is sacrosanct,” he said. “Everything else falls secondary to that, including statues.” Oh, isn’t that special?
So, the city has, in essence, given up trying to protect property from savage Marxist rioters who want to turn us into another Venezuelan utopian heaven on earth.
Why politicians allowing this kind of behavior isn’t a crime denies belief in a Benevolent Being.
