It was bound to happen sooner than later and now it has. Two Minnesota Democrats in recent weeks have publicly opposed President Joe Biden running for reelection, especially when a majority of Americans think Biden should not run according to polls.
In June, a Yahoo/YouGov poll discovered 64 percent of those surveyed do not think Biden should run for re-election, and 55 percent did not believe Trump should run again.
A July News Nation/Decision Desk HQ poll shows over 60 percent of voters and 30 percent of Democrats said Biden should not run again.
A Quinnipiac University national poll in July found that 71 percent of Americans did not want Joe Biden to run again.
A Des Moines Register Iowa poll in July conducted by J. Ann Selzer, a well-respected pollster, revealed that 67 percent of Iowans and 52 percent of Democrats hoped that Biden would not run again in 2024.
A Harvard CAPS–Harris poll in late June showed that 71 percent of those polled do not think Biden should run for a second term, compared to 29 percent who say he should run.
The New York Times/Siena College Research Institute revealed that 64 percent of Democrats wanted to see someone else run in 2024.
Representatives Angie Craig’s (D-MN) and Dean Phillips (D-MN) publicly asked for a replacement candidate for the presidency, making them the highest ranking Democrats at the federal level to say what’s on the party’s mind, according to a report done by Axios on Tuesday.
Last week, on a local radio show, Phillips said, “I think the country would be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats who step up.”
When he was asked if he will support a Biden reelection run for 2024, he said, “No.”
On Tuesday, Craig told the MinnPost, “I think Dean Phillips and I are in lockstep and alignment with that, and I’m going to do everything in my power as a member of Congress to make sure that we have a new generation of leadership.”
