is’s Call for ‘Equity” After Hurricane was not a Gaffe. It was a Natural Conclusion of Leftist Ideology //

After an embarrassing gaffe in South Korea in which Vice President Kamala Harir praised the United States’ strong alliance against North Korea, she is back at it again, but this time without gaffes and with a striking comment that reflects our country’s division over racial matters.

Priyanka Chopra hosted a Sept. 30 event where she interviewed Harris. Chopra asked a complex and loaded question about the United States’ climate goals and the hurricanes that have wreaked havoc in some parts of the country.

“When we look at the global consequences of emissions, the poorest countries are the most affected. They contributed the least to the climate crisis and are the ones most affected,” Chopra stated. “So, how should Americans feel about the long-term goals of the U.S. administration when it comes to being an international leader on this topic?”

After taking some time to answer Chopra’s first question, Harris said: “On the disparities…it is our lowest-income community and our communities of color who are most impacted and impacted these extreme conditions and impacted from issues that aren’t their own making…. So, we must address this in a manner that is based on equity. We need to understand that we fight for equality but also for equity. Understanding that not everyone starts in the same place. If we want people to feel equal, we must sometimes take into consideration these differences.”

The vice president of the United States stated, correctly, that disaster aid should be distributed on the basis of “equity,” and not necessarily need. He also said that low-income communities, as well as communities of color, should receive aid first, regardless of how urgent their situation is. The White House released a “factsheet” on Monday detailing the administration’s response. President Joe Biden visited Puerto Rico, which was hard hit by Hurricane Fiona.

Let’s dissect Harris’ comment. The left is in damage control mode trying to counter criticism and online posts chastising Harris, and to brand Republicans as lying and make them the offenders in this situation. Harris stated unambiguously that “extreme conditions” are disproportionately affecting low-income and minority communities and that resources must be allocated based on “equity.”

She stated that she was aware of the need to think about the families in Florida and Puerto Rico with Fiona.

This sentence clearly refers to hurricanes that have recently struck Florida and Puerto Rico as well as future storms. Harris’ comment that “we must address (these extreme circumstances) in a manner that is about providing resources based upon equity” was a reference to the fact that “we have (disaster relief),” both post-catastrophe and immediate aid.

Let’s stop the debate. Instead of defending Harris because you support the Biden administration let’s make a dishonorable comment when it’s made. The argument for “equity,” in the context of disaster-related resource is not new to those on the far left. In progressive ideology, there are many aspects that support equitable distribution of resources. You’re likely to have heard calls for more diversity in the workplace, on company boards, and in leadership positions on Congress and the Supreme Court. Let’s not forget about affirmative action at colleges and universities.

The merit-overs-race debate has been a topic of much discussion. Society benefits more when the most competent individuals hold influential positions. We don’t need to stereotype women or people of different sexual orientations and colors in order to create a more egalitarian country. We must level the playing field in order to achieve success and not give out quick passes. They say equality of opportunity is better than outcome.

Death knows no color. Everyone, regardless of race, has the right to receive aid in times of disaster. Harris’ charade leads to the obvious conclusion that soldiers will drop supplies to low-income communities and minority communities that are otherwise stable while wealthy white community members may be left starving or drowning. This is something we’ve seen before.

Prejudice and racism have plagued our country for many decades. In the grand scheme of things, however, we were able address it. Each year, we improve our efforts. The shift towards solving the problem didn’t come from giving people preferential treatment or handouts, but from providing minorities access to education and resources that would enable them to become well-rounded individuals capable of leading and assuming specialized jobs.

We don’t have to deny anyone help when they need it or the chance to advance. We must be fair to everyone, regardless of their background.
