President Biden claimed that he would cancel or forgive student loans up to $20,000 per person based on “the financial damages of the pandemic.” However a Wall Street Journal editorial noted that “the government had stopped student loan payments from 2020, holding borrowers harmless.” Biden extended the student loan pause until December 31, one month before he declared that the pandemic was over.

Biden’s “plan,” or as he calls them, is clearly unconstitutional. It is not unreasonable to say that everything in it is wrong. It is not clear whether there are legal grounds to challenge it.

In fact, Biden has modified the “plan”, since the original announcement to worsen the problem for potential challengers. The estimated cost for the plan was $400 billion at the last word.

The “plan” was temporarily halted Friday by an Eighth Circuit order while a panel of judges considers the standing issue in the lawsuit brought in by six states in United States District Court for Eastern District of Missouri. The Wall Street Journal has an excellent editorial about the Eighth Circuit order.

Biden’s “plan,” in other words, amounts to a royal decree. This is not how things are supposed to work. Biden seems confused about where his authority comes from. I cannot find the source of the RNC Research clip below and can’t provide context. This is a big-time delusional if you take it as it is.

Professor Turley responds to it and shares his thoughts below. It is called “a bizarre boast”, which I find euphemistic. “Bizarre boast” is a misnomer.

Biden visited Delaware State University last week to discuss his “plan”. The White House has posted the transcript. He did not discuss the legal issues that underlie it. He made up for it with his attitude:

I will never be ashamed of helping the working-class Americans recover from the pandemic. This is especially true for the Republicans officials who voted to tax cuts totaling $2 trillion that primarily benefitted the wealthy Americans and the largest corporations that weren’t paid for and increased our deficit.

I don’t want it to come from MAGA Republicans — officials with hundreds of thousands of dollar debts and even millions of dollars in relief loans for pandemics forgiven who now attack — attack me because I help working-class and middle class Americans.

My team at White House posted a Vidio [sic] — an online video of these people. It’s worth checking out.

I will add this quotable quote to the original: “But despite Republican officials saying, we can afford student aid. This is because my administration has experienced historic deficit reduction in the first two years. The Republicans voted against this deficit reduction.
