It would be a time saver for everyone if Democrats could point to a policy item on their agenda that isn’t going save democracy, if such an item exists.

Republicans are killing democracy by voting. They are killing democracy if they don’t vote. Max Boot of The Washington Post writes that the only way to “save” democracy is to empower one party rule. This position may seem counterintuitive to anyone who has a middle-school education.

“Now, you must vote to literally save democracy once more,” says President Joe Biden. Or we will lose our “fundamental right and freedoms like right to choose, privacy, the vote–our very democracies.”

Chilling stuff. It doesn’t stop there. We are also killing democracy by failing to reform the filibuster. This would allow the smallest of minority to push through massive generational “reforms,” without any national consensus or debate.

This is the position of not only left-wing pundits or The New York Times editorial boards but also senators charged with protecting their institution. I wonder if they will also support this democracy-saving solution next session.

We are also killing democracy if we don’t nationalize our economy to avoid a climate crisis. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) explains, “We have to save democracy to save our species.”

We are destroying democracy if we don’t empty the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in order to temporarily keep gas prices low so that Democrats can win in 2022. Chris Hayes, MSNBC’s host, says that we are in a position where keeping gas prices low is crucial to the preservation and strengthening of our democracy’s future.

We must allow the president unilaterally to create trillion-dollar spending bills, and to break existing private sector contracts by fiat. For democracy. For democracy.

If the Supreme Court gives the public the right to vote on an issue such as abortion, which is not mentioned anywhere in the Constitution of the United States, it is “degrading” democracy.

Only one party can save democracy. Guess which one? Federalize elections to allow states to force states to count mail-in ballots that arrive 10 days late. This will legalize ballot harvesting. It will also allow felons to vote. It will also enable bureaucrats and other officials to redraw congressional districts. You know what else?

You may recall last year, when left-wingers argued that Mike Pence’s support of basic voting ID, which was backed by around 80% Americans and implemented in almost every free nation, heralded an “authoritarian regime.”

Then there are the “election deniers”. You know, “The Big Lie”. If Democrats believed that “election denial” was a threat to American democracy, they wouldn’t be sustaining it. Since 1988, the American Left has not accepted the legitimacy that a Republican presidential win was legitimate. Democrats “save democracy” through investing millions in the primary campaigns of “election-denying Republicans” to set up a more favorable general elections.

Hillary Clinton, one prominent Democratic figure, stated this week that right-wing extremists had a plan to steal the next presidential elections.

This is the preemptive electoral denialism that Democrats have been engaging in for almost two decades. Democrats do not lose elections. They are victims of voter suppression, gerrymandering, voter suppression, “structural” problems, too much freedom of speech, Fox News or Russian grunts.

The politics of hystericism began to take hold in 2016 with the Democratic Party. It all began with a bizarre tale of a second-rate power stealing democracy with a few Facebook ads, and a Manchurian candidate. The collective psychotic break that followed was supported by unethical media and a corrupt investigation into President Trump that was predicated upon an opposition-research paper filled with fictions and distortions and Russian disinformation. Democrats wanted to discredit the president. They succeeded.

A large portion of the Left has been so dependent on infantile fearmongering since then, they are unable to debate any issues or deal with the reality of opposition parties. They’re engaging in closed-door pseudointellectual debate-club discussions about “saving democracy” when they’re not calling political opponents (semi- or fascists, racists, misogynists, homophobes, transphobes, or death cultists) slandering them.

Democrats, who have spent years delegitimizing the Supreme Court and rule of law, undermining legislative norms, cheering on unprecedented and blatant executive abuses, and using the Department of Justice to target their political enemies, among other “democracy”-destroying behaviors, do not occupy any high moral ground. While “democracy” used to be a simple euphemism for “stuff that we want”, it has become a rhetorical device that denotes an illiberal mindset.
