A new national survey has revealed that two-thirds of voters disapprove of Big Tech’s censorship of political-related posts before next month’s midterm election.
A national opinion survey was conducted by Susquehanna Polling and Research, Inc. from October 4-11, 2022. It asked Americans the following question about the practice of social media platforms censoring political content.
Do you approve of Big Tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter censoring news stories, and preventing users sharing information about the upcoming election in Novem?
Two-thirds of respondents (66%) say they don’t approve of Big Tech’s censorship. This includes 55 percent who “strongly disapprove”. However, about a quarter (24%) say that they support blocking users from sharing, liking or posting political content on social media platforms they don’t like. Others are undecided or have no opinion.
51 percent of voters who disapprove of President Joe Biden’s job performance are opposed to the censorship. 35 percent support it.
The self-identified Democrats are more evenly divided, but more are against censorship (44%%) than they are for it (39%).
However, voters cannot turn to traditional corporate media for their news.
When asked if they trust corporate news media to tell truth when reporting on news stories or if they think media “misrepresent facts to push a policy agenda”, only 13 percent said they believed in the media’s veracity. However, three quarters of voters (77%) believe that media aren’t telling the truth and favor a political narrative.
Majorities of Republicans (91%) to 6 percent, independents (79%)-10 percent, and Democrats (59%) all believe that corporate news media don’t report the news truthfully in an effort influence voters.
