Conservative Twitter accounts reported that they gained thousands of followers after Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought the platform last week.
According to Memetica research, which analyzes digital data, the New York Times reported last Wednesday that “far right” Twitter accounts have gained thousands of new followers.
According to Memetica, Kari Lake’s Twitter account gained 18,000 followers in 24 hours. This 600 percent increase is compared to the average number of followers Ms. Lake sees per day. Over 3,100 of those 18,000 new followers were new to Twitter.
Memetica reported that Lauren Boebert (Republican from Colorado) gained over 18,679 followers in the last 24hrs, a 1,200% increase above normal. Nearly half of these new followers were also new users to Twitter.
Ben Decker, Memetica’s CEO, stated that the company’s findings were alarming. He told the Times that the increase in followers could be an indication that far right people are returning to Twitter because they see the potential for more friendly environments.
Decker said, “The more followers these accounts have, and the wider reach they have,” Decker explained.
Decker didn’t define “far right” Twitter accounts, which is not surprising.
These comments prove that Musk’s concerns regarding online platforms biases against certain viewpoints are well-founded.
Musk, for his part, has argued that Twitter is “de facto a public square” and should therefore be treated as such.
He tweeted in March, “Given Twitter serves as de facto the public square, failing to adhere free speech principles fundamentally undermines Democracy.”
