Google Search Bias in Key Senate Races didn’t carry over to House Races

Tuesday’s release by MRC Free Speech America of a study titled “Google CAUGHT Manipulating Search and Buries GOP Campaign Sites In 83% Of Top Senate Races” revealed that Google had manipulated data to suppress or censor Republicans in key Senate race races at a moment when the U.S. Senate is in the balance.

Fox News Digital was informed by a spokesperson for Google that the report was designed to mislead. It tests uncommon search terms that people seldom use. Anyone who searches these candidate names on Google will see that their campaign websites rank at top of the results. In fact, all these candidates rank in the top three and sometimes in the first spot of Google Search results.

MRC Free Speech America used the exact same methodology as its Senate study to analyze 36 top House races. Polling shows that the House is not in balance.

Amazingly, Google did not show bias against Republicans in House races. Google’s Senate study search terms were flawed, so why did they work without any indication of bias in the House?

“This is more evidence Google deliberately manipulated data to support the Senate races,” Brent Bozell, founder and president of MRC, stated in a statement. “Google must explain itself and stop manipulating elections. The day of reckoning is near.

MRC Free Speech America’s method was correct. However, when you compare Google’s search results with Bing or DuckDuckGo, Google becomes more obvious about its search bias.

Google hid 10 of the 12 Senate Republican Party candidates’ websites in the MRC Free Speech America Senate study, while highlighting their opponents’ campaign sites in organic results. However, both the Senate Democratic Party candidate’s campaign websites and those of the Senate Republican Party candidates were shown by DuckDuckGo and Bing in the top five organic search results page one.

MRC Free Speech America discovered that Google placed Republican campaign websites higher than Democrat campaign sites by a 21-11 margin in House race races, while giving equal treatment to four other races.

The second study, which analyzed 36 races using the “Toss Ups” list from RealClearPolitics, revealed a small, predictable variation between Republicans and Democrats running to fill House seats across search engines Google, Bing, and DuckDuckGo. Bing ranked Republicans higher than Democrats by 17-11, while treating eight House races equally; DuckDuckGo had a narrow 14-13 edge for Republicans while treating nine races equally.

Fox News conducted its own searches on two occasions and confirmed the results of MRC Free Speech America regarding Google’s search bias. John Roberts, Fox News’ co-anchor of America Reports, stated that his Fox News team “did a little testing ourselves” and found similar results. Kelly O’Grady, Fox Business Network correspondent, said that Fox Business also “did a little test ourselves” and found “Republican websites are indeed lower.”

Google appears to have changed its algorithm to favor certain political candidates. However, the two studies indicate that it is targeting the Senate.

Google did not respond to MRC Free Speech America’s request for comment regarding the House study results.

Methodology

MRC Free Speech America researchers analyzed Google search results for 36 House races that RealClearPolitics October 19, identified as “Toss Up” races. The House “Toss Up Races” comprised the Democratic Party and Republican Party candidates in the following states: Alaska (Arizona), California, Connecticut, Georgia. Illinois, Indiana. Maine, Maryland. Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada and New Hampshire.

MRC Free Speech America developed an algorithm to automate this process in a clean setting. Organic search can be performed in a “clean environment” without the influence of tracking cookies or prior search history.

MRC Free Speech America researchers used the algorithm to search each candidate’s name using the words “House Race 2022”. Our researchers examined Google’s results and determined the rank of each candidate’s campaign website.

Example(s): “Yesli Vega House Race 2020” and “Abigail Spanberger House Race 2020”.
