Georgia’s Voter Law is referred to as “Jim Crow 2.0” for a reason
Today, Republicans know that blocking access the ballot has been a matter of legal maneuvering and political schemes.
Jason Morgan Lewis wrote the Times column. He was described as “a historian who has written extensively on the civil rights movement and politics”, and this reflected the general certainty in liberal media and elsewhere in lefty world (like with President Joe Biden! The Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed into law election integrity measures that were passed in Georgia by the Republicans. They were aimed at suppressing voter turnout. The cry of “racism!”
This is what the Times article said:
“What the legislators in Georgia and across America have reminded us of is that backlash against expanded voting rights has often arrived via a method that our eras share: laws, such as Georgia’s Senate Bill 202, which were passed by elected politicians.
Opponents of the Georgia law call it “Jim Crow 2.0″ because they recognize the continuity between the past and the present. The bill’s most passionate supporters, who gathered in front of a painting depicting a building built on the site of an Antebellum plantation to see Gov. Brian Kemp signed it into law. They seem less interested in separating themselves from the past and more eager to see Americans forget it.”
And then.
Georgia recently began early voting under the new law. Here is the headline from Atlanta’s Fox 5 this Week:
Georgians “blow away” previous turnout record on the 1st day early voting
Fox 5 reports:
“ATLANTA – Day 2 of early voting in Georgia has not yet begun, and election officials claim that voter turnout has exceeded numbers from the previous midterm elections.
According to the Georgia Secretary of State, more than 125,000 people voted yesterday on the first day of early voting.
72,000 Georgians showed up on the first day of the 2018 midterms.
“As of 4:15, we have seen more than 100,000 Georgians vote early,” said Gabe Sterling, the Secretary of State’s COO. This surpasses the previous midterm record of 72,000 votes cast early and there is still a lot of voting to do today,’ Gabe Sterling (the Secretary of State’s COO) said in a tweet.
Can you say “Oops!”?
The Times wasn’t the only lefty media outlet with a lot of egg on its faces. This reminder was headlined by Fox News:
Flashback: CNN and MSNBC ran with ‘Jim Crow voter suppression claims in Georgia before record-setting turnout
Fox recalled the following:
CNN and MSNBC spent much time in 2021 describing Georgia’s Republican-passed Election Integrity Act (GEOIA) as the next Jim Crow. But, the Peach State’s record-breaking turnout has effectively discredited the liberal narrative.
Democrats and their media allies repeatedly claimed that the law was a racist attempt to deny people the right of vote, particularly minorities, and that it could threaten the stability of American democracy. According to Brad Raffensperger, Georgia Secretary of State, the state saw a 75.3% rise in early voting during the 2018 midterms, and a 3.3% increase in early voting for the 2020 presidential election.
This is far from CNN and MSNBC talking points which suggested that the new voting law was similar to Jim Crow laws that legalized and enforced racial segregation throughout the south. Gabriel Sterling, the chief operating officer of the Georgia Office of the Secretary of State, is also the interim secretary of state. He believes that record turnout has shattered the liberal narrative.
Not to be overlooked is the fact that all these segregationist smears cost Georgian businesses, as Ronna McDaniel (RNC Chairwoman) noted, around $100 million in revenue. The New York Post noted that:
Major corporations also condemned the election law, and many boycotted the state as a result.
Major League Baseball moved its 2021 All-Star Game from Atlanta to protest the law.
Will Smith, a Hollywood star, announced that his production company would no more film the antebellum drama Emancipation within the state because of the law.
Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines, Merck Air Lines, UPS, JP Morgan Chase and Microsoft were just a few of the many companies that expressed concern about voter suppression following the passage of the law.
In short: The media hype about “Jim Crow 2.0”, which flooded Georgia with a torrent of “voter suppression”, was, to put it politely, bunk. Hogwash.
Will The Times, CNN and MSNBC apologize for publishing a major league lie? Major League Baseball will accept an apology for promoting the same lie? Will Will Smith? Will Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines, Merck or UPS, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft or Microsoft?
Do not wait for an apology from any of them.
This is a classic example showing how media giants create a frenzy based on an untruth.
