The left is so deluded that they believe Elon Musk has sinister plans for Twitter. While more freedom may mean that there are more right-wingers involved, it does not mean Musk will eliminate the left-wingers.
Jeet Heer, in a piece in The Nation titled “Elon Musk’s Big Twitter Adventure Will End in Disaster” states that “The good news is…that the plutocrat’s move to transform a social media platform in to a forum for far right probably won’t work.”
Heer (photo) starts the piece by linking the Paul Pelosi attack and Musk’s purchase. He writes that just hours after he closed the deal, “In darkness Friday morning, an assailant broke in to Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco home with the apparent intent to harm or kill her.” Pelosi’s husband was attacked with a hammer after the break-in.
How are they related? Heer writes that the two events are connected by their chronological proximity. Quick reporting revealed that David DePape, the alleged attacker had consumed a toxic mixture of hate speech on social media.
It’s a ridiculous idea. The attacker is clearly insane, and even if social media did propel his attack, it happened before Musk made a single change on Twitter.
The current state of social media is leading towards radicalization. Musk may be able to make a difference. More freedom and fewer echo chambers could result in more productive dialogue, which will reduce radicalization.
The left is hostile to discourse and feels threatened. Heer writes: “Musk is taking control of Twitter under the banners of free speech and a promise to end the restrictive rules imposed on the site by its previous managers.”
Heer calls it “the banner of free speech” while Heer says the “supposedly restrictive rules”, which diminish Musk’s mission as well as clamping down on people, ideas, and Twitter users in recent years.
Heer says, “The fear of Musk making one of the most influential social media sites in the world even more of an agent for radicalization, a platform that lies and extremism flourishes.” He’ll also create more David DePapes in future.”
So Heer admits that our society has become more extreme and radicalized and that social media has played a role in that. It seems that his solution is to be more moderate and restricted, and not to give Musk a chance to fix the toxic hellscape with less freedom and more bots.
Leftists are insanely illogical. It is pure hysteria to think that there may finally be some fairness on Twitter after all the years of neoliberal control.
