Liberal journalists are obsessed by the idea that we are about to enter another Civil War, and you can guess who they believe is responsible for the violence. Hint: It’s not Democrats. Jon Meacham, historian, appeared on Wednesday’s Today to promote his new book about Abraham Lincoln.
Savannah Guthrie, host, said that our darkest hour was 2022. Do you see any parallels to those times?
Meacham, of course, replied in the affirmative
Tragically, yes. Human nature is history. History is not a fairytale. There wasn’t a once upon an time, and there won’t be a happily ever again. This was on us. It was on Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and that generation. It was on us. It’s a stress test to citizenship. We can have a conversation with the past and see how fallen, frail, and fallible sinners could do some saintly acts. Not all saintly, but enough to help us move forward. I believe we can do it.
Meacham is fond of using history to further his partisan goals. He referred to Donald Trump’s patriotic impeachment as “why we fought for the Revolution” in 2019. On September 1, 2022 another NBC News historian, Michael Beschloss compared our current political differences with the Civil War of 1861s and fascism from the1940s. He made a connection to Biden’s dark speech referring to half of the country.
Joe Biden says, “Here we go, I am president but the democracy is in danger, like 1860 and like 1940.” We could lose our system, our rule-of-law, and our free, fair elections.
Major Garrett, CBS Washington Correspondent, used “speculative fiction” to promote his new book on September 21, 2022. He predicted GOP violence in 2023, and a civil war.
Don’t believe journalists who talk about coming together. They are more interested in blaming conservatives for the future civil war.

SAVANNAH GUTRIE: We’ll now return you to a fresh view of Abraham Lincoln, our nation’s 16th president. Of course, Lincoln freed the slaves and saved our union. Lincoln was more than his political actions and his place in history. Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer-Prize winner historian, takes a closer look into Lincoln’s leadership and explains why he did the things he did in his book “And There Was Light. Abraham Lincoln and The American Struggle”. Hi, Jon.
…
GUTHRIE Jon, I enjoy talking to historians because they often make me feel better about the current times. They say “Well, it wasn’t as bad back then.” But if you look at the divisions in our country right now, many people talk about the Civil War and 1850s, as well as the fear of violence and division. Do you see any parallels to those times today?
JON MEACHAM : Tragically, yes.
GUTHRIE – I hope we can call on our better angels.
