Report: Elon Musk to Lay off Nearly 75% of Twitter’s Employees

According to reports, Elon Musk will eliminate approximately 5,500 Twitter employees after he acquires the company.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Musk’s acquisition is a “golden ticket” for the struggling company that will “potentially assist[] its leadership in avoiding painful announcements that could have demoralized staff and possibly crippled their ability to combat spam, misinformation, hate speech, and spam.”

The report stated that Twitter could be saved hundreds of millions of dollars by laying off employees. It also said that Musk had told insiders that he pays too much for Twitter.

He reportedly stated that “Although I and other investors are clearly overpaying for Twitter right at the moment, the long-term value of Twitter in my opinion is an order to magnitude greater than its current price,” he said.

Musk stated earlier in the year that he wanted Twitter to be bought to promote free speech online, after blasting Twitter for censoring content.

He tweeted in March, “Given Twitter serves as de facto the public square, failing to adhere free speech principles fundamentally undermines Democracy.”

Later, he reaffirmed his belief in free speech and stated that “[f]ree speech was essential to a functioning democracy.”
