According to reports, Facebook created a “special portal” which allows the Department of Homeland Security and its government partners to flag “disinformation” for censorship.
The Intercept reported Monday that newly discovered government documents show social media platforms working in concert with the government to censor “disinformation” more closely than ever before.
The Intercept linked to Facebook documents with instructions for government workers and law enforcement officers to log into a “Facebook Content Request System” still hosted at the URL https://www.facebook.com/xtakedowns/login. The portal was created by Facebook so that government officials could quickly identify objectionable content and request that it be removed.
The evidence from the portal shows that even though DHS technically ended its Orwellian Disinformation Governance Board in August, the board’s work is still ongoing.
The Intercept explained the potential dangers of DHS’s covert, Ministry-of-Truth-type operations.
The Intercept stated that “how disinformation is defined by government has not been clearly articulated” and that the subjective nature of what constitutes information provides an open door for DHS officials making politically motivated determinations about dangerous speech.
Two months ago, NewsBusters reported that DHS continued its counter-“disinformation” work in a more cloaked fashion, and that the government specifically intended to target certain content areas including COVID-19, election security and “domestic violent extremism.”
It appears that DHS also has support from its ostensibly independent auditor. The Intercept referred the Intercept to a DHS Office of Inspector General Report that recommended that DHS “develop an integrated strategy to counter disinformation campaigns that are appearing in social media.”
