It is not surprising that Republicans have a growing share of Hispanic and black votes, but the Wall Street Journal poll shows some recent numbers.
In Journal polls conducted in August and October, 17% of Black voters indicated that they would choose a Republican candidate for Congress to a Democrat. This is a significantly higher percentage than the 8% of Black voters that voted for President Donald Trump in 2020, and the 8% who backed GOP candidates to the House in 2018, as recorded by AP VoteCast. This large survey includes all voters who participated in those elections.
As more black voters turn out to be Republican voters, this percentage will increase. Democratic policies are not designed to appeal to voters of all races, whose main concerns are crime and the cost of living.
In the Journal’s October survey of Latino voters, Democrats had a 5 point lead over Republicans in choosing a congressional candidate. This is a smaller advantage than the 11-point lead that the Democrats had in August.
This is a drastic drop in Democratic support in a very short time. But what’s really remarkable is the shift between 2018 and 2020.
VoteCast discovered that Latino voters voted for President Biden over Donald Trump in 2020 by 28 percentage points and 31 percent respectively in the 2018 House races.
From 28-point and 31 point leads, to 5. And they are falling. If these numbers are even remotely close, it is clear that there are large areas in the country where Democrats will have trouble winning anything.
