tia James, New York’s attorney general, is Donald Trump’s chief legal foe. New York Attorney general Letitia James is hoping to win Tuesday’s second term against a lesser-known Republican attorney. James, a Democrat is being challenged by Republican Michael Henry. Henry, a commercial litigation lawyer who has been endorsed various police unions, faces long odds against one the state’s most powerful Democrats. James, 64, made history in January 2019 when she was elected to office. She is the first Black woman to be elected to statewide office in the state, and she is also the first Black attorney general in the state. She began investigating Trump almost immediately after she took office. In September, she sued the Republican alleging that he and his company had misled banks about the value of his assets. 2022 M ELECTIONS LIVE UPDATES James also confronted a star of her party, overseeing a sexual harassment probe last year that led to Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned. Other foes include the National Rifle Association, whom she is suing for self-dealing by executives; manufacturers and distributors opioid painkillers; Roman Catholic Church, whom her office is investigating for priest abuse; and the NYPD which she sued for its treatment of protesters following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Henry, like many New York Republicans, has campaigned on rising crime fears and unwavering support of law enforcement. Henry favors reducing gun restrictions and allowing businesses to be more easily regulated. Henry stated that James’ office was “used in the service of political ambition.” He has criticised her for going after Trump, and for getting involved in the Cuomo probe when she wanted to replace him as governor. James briefly ran for governor in the wake of Cuomo’s resignation last year, but he abandoned the effort after two months. James sued Trump’s administration numerous times when he was president. This included challenging policies on immigration, education, and health care. She also fought Trump’s plans to include a question on immigration status on the Census. This was a victory for her at the U.S. Supreme Court. Trump has repeatedly attacked James’ actions towards him, claiming that she is motivated by “racism and political considerations.” James had previously called Trump a “con man”, a “carnival barker”, and a “fear monger” before she won her 2018 office. James promised to use her office to protect abortion rights in the state after a leak of Roe v. Wade’s Supreme Court decision. James, who was born in Brooklyn and lives there today, made a deeply personal disclosure by revealing that she had an abortion around two decades ago.
