Tuesday, around noon, the Champaign County Clerk’s Office reported that its systems were experiencing poor performance and connectivity issues. The office believes the problems are caused by distributed denial of service (DDoS), attacks.

“The Champaign County Clerk’s Office is aware that connectivity issues and computer server performance are being impacted,” the clerk’s official announced Tuesday via social media. “The Clerk’s Office believes that these are due cyber-attacks on network and servers.”
The post continued to inform readers that these weren’t the first problems at the office. It stated that the clerk’s office had been subject to repeated DDoS attacks over the past month.

“For the past month, the Champaign County Clerk’s website has been the victim of repeated D-DOS attack. Fortunately, the strengthened security and response by the Clerk’s IT team have prevented these attacks being successful and the Clerk’s website has remained secure,” the post states.
The office stated that voter information has not been compromised. This encourages voters to remain in line and not be discouraged from casting a vote.
Tuesday’s statement went so far that it called the issues a “strategic, coordinated effort to undermine or destabilize our democratic system.”
