KING: Ron DeSantis wins reelection in Florida
Florida Republican Governor. According to The Associated Press and Fox News, Ron DeSantis will be reelected. Although it is not clear how large his margin will be, DeSantis leads with almost 80% of the reporting, more than 16 points, and more than 1,000,000 votes, 57.96% compared to Democratic U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist’s 41.39%.
Polling has long suggested that DeSantis would defeat Crist, a former Republican governor. According to RealClearPolitics, he beat Crist by 11.6 percentage points. FiveThirtyEight had a similar spread. The Cook Political Report gave the race a rating of “likely Republican.”
Famously, DeSantis reopened Florida early in the COVID-19 pandemic. This prompted a slew Of attacks from the Left but welcomed a large influx from other states. Even the Conservative Political Action Conference left Washington, D.C., to head to the Sunshine State. Dr. Joseph Ladapo was DeSantis’s state surgeon general and he didn’t hesitate to challenge the narrative about pandemic restrictions.
DeSantis, Ladapo, who encouraged a probe into controverial medical interventions for transgender children, led to the Florida Board of Medicine and Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine approving a new rule last Wednesday that bans puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones as well as transgender surgeries for minors.
DeSantis also signed “Parental rights in Education” legislation, which was infamously called “The Don’t Say Gay Bill” by its opponents. In response, Disney signed a bill revoking Disney World’s special status of an independent special district. This was seen by many conservatives as a major victory against “woke capitalism.”
Rumours have it that DeSantis might be considering a presidential run in 2024. His big win could help him to a strong position for the GOP nomination. Trump supported DeSantis for reelection but Trump didn’t campaign with him. Trump even called DeSantis “DeSanctimonious”, calling him “desaintious”. This suggests that Trump may view DeSantis as a competitor. Trump has teased a major announcement–perhaps regarding 2024–for Nov. 15.
DeSantis declared in March that his wife, Casey had been cured from breast cancer and was now “officially cancer-free.” $100,000,000 was included in the state’s 2022-2023 budget to support cancer research in the Sunshine State.
