Republican Monica De La Cruz narrowly defeated her Democratic opponent Michelle Vallejo for the newly drawn 15th Congressional District in Texas. This was a crucial win for the GOP in a race in which border security was a major campaign issue.
Following the 2020 Census, the seat was redrawn and now includes a region in South Texas near the Rio Grande Valley border with Mexico.
This race was regarded as the most competitive in Texas and saw a clash of two competing narratives — Texas turning Blue and Hispanics leaning Republican.
Both candidates had supported their respective bases. De La Cruz had praised the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. He ran on issues such as border security and rejecting “woke” culture.

Vallejo had gained the support of top liberal politicians such as Sens. Bernie Sanders, I.Vt. and Elizabeth Warren, D.Mass., are strong supporters of abortion rights as well as Medicare-for-all.
“Overall people feel like we need to make big changes,” Vallejo stated in an interview with The Washington Post. “Is South Texas representing itself as it is?”
