crat Hillary Scholten wins election as US House member in Michigan’s 3rd District // Democrat Hillary Scholten won the race for Michigan’s third congressional District, The Associated Press projects. This will flip a seat from red-to-blue in a difficult election year for Democrats. Scholten defeated John Gibbs, the GOP opponent, for the seat. The seat is now open after Gibbs defeated incumbent Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) in a primary. Meijer voted last year to impeach former President Donald Trump, which led the former president to endorse Gibbs’ candidacy almost a year before Election Day. The DCCC and other Democratic organizations boosted candidates such as Gibbs who backed Trump and made false claims regarding the 2020 presidential election with the expectation that those candidates would be easier in general elections.
