s and Florida: Progressive Candidates Win House Seats
At least three progressive Democrats won races Tuesday to the House seats in Florida’s congressional districts.
Maxwell Alejandro Frost (a Democrat) beat Calvin Wimbish, a Republican nominee, to win Florida’s 10th Congressional District seat 59% to almost 40%, according to The Associated Press.
Frost, 25 years old, will be the first representative from Generation Z in the House.
Frost declares that he is the first member of Generation Z Congress and will fight from Day One to end gun violence, win Medicare for All and transform our racist criminal justice systems, ending the climate crisis, and win Medicare for All.
After being endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Frost won the Democratic primary. He was one of many progressive-backed candidates who won primaries for open House seats this year.
Greg Casar, a former Austin City Council member, won Texas’ 35th Congressional District with 89% of the vote. He beat Dan McQueen, a Republican nominee, with 76.6%, AP reported.
Casar, 33, won a Democratic primary in March with high profile endorsements from Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D.N.Y; Justice Democrats; Our Revolution Movement; and Sanders.
Casar’s policy priorities include “Medicare For All”, tuition-free higher education and legalization of marijuana.
Casar’s other policy goals are, according to his website, increasing access for abortion in Texas. Casar is credited with the Austin City Council’s passing of amendments to cover abortion travel costs in Texas.
His campaign website states that Casar is dedicated to increasing access and reproductive health care, repealing Hyde Amendment and codifying Roe v. Wade via the Women’s Health [Protection] Act.”
Jasmine Crockett, a progressive Democrat, was leading Republican James Rodgers’ in Texas’ 30th Congressional District with 75% of the vote. After Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson’s retirement, Crockett was supported by Sanders and Our Revolution.
Crockett proposed expanding voting access and codifying Roe v. Wade as policy priorities on her campaign webpage.
