passes Constitutional Amendment to Prohibit Noncitizens from Voting //
On Tuesday, Ohio voters overwhelmingly approved Issue 2 to ban noncitizens voting.
It was one of many ballot initiative that dealt with election integrity in the current year’s elections. The Columbus Dispatch reported Issue 2 passed with 77.1% support by Ohioans, with more than 92% of those votes counted.
The amendmentrequires “only citizens of the United States who are at least 18 years old and have been a legal resident for at least 30 consecutive days can vote in any state or local election.”
The amendment also prohibits local governments depriving people of the right to vote in local elections if they do not qualify to vote in state elections.
This became an issue after Yellow Springs in western Ohio, votedto allow noncitizens the right to vote in 2019.
“It’s a bad idea for callously giving away the right to vote people that haven’t earned it,” stated Frank LaRose (a Republican) who was a leading advocate of the ban. “I believe that citizenship has value and citizenship has status. Many of our ancestors worked hard to earn this citizenship.
