ca De La Cruz to Be the First Republican to Represent South Texas District
Monica De La Cruz is a first generation Texan. Her grandmother, who emigrated from Mexico to escape political strife, is Monica De La Cruz. She will now be the first Republican to represent Rio Grande Valley residents in the U.S House of Representatives.
The Associated Press reported that 74% of the votes had been counted and De La Cruz was well on her way to defeating Michelle Vallejo, the Democratic nominee, 53.3% to 44.8%, in the 15th Congressional District.
Vallejo emerged as the winner of a six-candidate race to compete with De La Cruz in the House seat left vacant at the hands of Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-Texas), to run for the newly redrawn 34th Congressional District.
De La Cruz, 48, stated that she wants to fix the “broken immigration systems and failed government policies” she witnessed.
She supports a return of former President Donald Trump’s “Remain In Mexico” policy, which was scrapped by the Biden government to control illegal immigration. This would require asylum-seekers to remain out of the U.S. while they are pending their cases. She supports the construction of a wall at the border and strengthening U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
She stated that she supports reducing the influence of the Department of Education at the local and state level and banning critical race theory from public schools. She supports nuclear energy as a part of American energy independence and rejects the Democrats’ Green New Deal.
De La Cruz is an insurance agent and holds a bachelor’s in marketing from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
