rt warns that Michigan adopts controversial new voting rules that could jeopardize election security
EAST LANSING (Michigan) – Michiganders voted yes to an election-related amendment to their state constitution.
The Proposal2 amendment passed with more 58% of the votes.
“I’d like thank the millions of Michigan voters that said, ‘Yes,’ to Proposal 2, which protects the fundamental rights to vote while increasing security and expanding accessibility of Michigan’s future election,” Micheal Davy, executive director of Promote the Vote said in a prepared statement Tuesday evening.
Davis stated that Michigan voters support the right to every vote be counted and that every voice is heard, regardless of who or what party we support.
Opponents of the amendment claim that Proposal 2 will make Michigan elections more vulnerable to voter fraud.
“In voting to approve Michigan Proposal 2, Michigan voters were conned into voting to gut voting ID requirements and implementing others reckless changes that will threaten the security of fair and honest election in the State,” Hans von Spakovsky, senior legal fellow at The Heritage Foundation, stated to The Daily Signal via email. The Heritage Foundation’s news outlet, The Daily Signal, is The Daily Signal.
The proposal will amend the state constitution in order to include:
- A nine-day early voting period.
- The requirement to present a photo ID. If a voter doesn’t have a photo identification, they can sign an “affidavit verifying his identity.” A voter will not be allowed to vote provisionally if they have signed an affidavit to verify their identity.
- All military personnel serving overseas must postmark their ballots before Election Day in order to have them counted.
- Ensure that voters have the right of requesting an absentee ballot.
- The state must pay for tracking systems and prepaid stamps to allow absentee voters to vote.
- State funding for absentee ballot drop box boxes
- A provision that allows local governments to accept “charitable contributions and in-kind donations to conduct and manage elections,” provided the donations are publicly disclosed.
- Require election officials to perform election audits.
Secure MI Vote was opposed by the coalition. They stated that the advocates of the state constitutional amendment would try to claim that signing an affidavit is the same as ID, but it is not. Anyone will be able walk into their voting station and sign their name to receive a regular ballot, without ever having to show an ID.
The coalition states that the amendment “will open up more opportunities to not believe our elections“,
According to Steven Johnson, a Michigan Republican state Representative, Proposal 2 “eliminates all effort that we could make to require a voter identification.” Johnson stated that the proposal was rejected by the Daily Signal. Johnson stated that the amendment would allow voters to sign the affidavit instead of ID, or show other forms of identification such as IDs given by a local union or school.
The Center for Tech and Civic Life, which received a substantial cash injection from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in 2020 was heavily invested in the public administration for elections that year. Critics such as Mollie Shemingway have pointed out that the average voter in Georgia who voted for Trump was $1.91, while those who voted for Biden were paid an average of $7.13 per voter. Hemingway and others claimed that these funds helped swing Biden’s election in his favor.
Michigan Democrat state Rep. Yousef Rabhi stated to The Daily Signal that he believes the amendment is “a great proposition.”
Rabhi stated that Proposal 2 was an attempt to “into the Constitution what is already being practiced in the state of Michigan.”
Although the Democrat lawmaker acknowledged that he doesn’t like some parts of the amendment, he believes it to be “overwhelmingly good.”
