Republicans are beginning to realize that Donald Trump must step down from the stage and stop destroying his party and country. Tomorrow’s New York Post cover will reflect this consensus:
John Podhoretz, who was never a Trump fan, wrote in the same paper: “Here’s How Donald Trump sabotaged Republican midterms.” Trump has a terrible record.
Liberal fundraisers funded Trump-endorsed candidates in GOP primaries across the country to help them win so that Democrats could face them at the general election. It was transparently cynical, and an abuse of the political process. It worked like gangbusters.
Kevin Robillard, of the Huffington Post, noted Wednesday afternoon that Hilary Scholten, a Michigan Democrat, was finally declared the winner in her House seat against John Gibbs. “With this race, every Republican who won their primary with help of Democratic meddling has lost the general election.”
Trump was treated like a child by the Democrats, who played him enthusiastically because of his megalomania. He is a loser.
I was on the Bolt report earlier this evening with Andrew Bolt from Sky News Australia. Andrew asked me what my thoughts were about his view that Donald Trump had contributed greatly to the Republicans’ midterm defeat. Because he had read this post, he knew my answer. The conversation was mainly about Trump’s liability to the Republican Party, and the conservative movement.
Trump is a toast. Trump has a few loyal followers, but most of them are not reliable Republicans or consistent voters. They can join his ship if he wants. The rest of us must look ahead and begin to choose a far better candidate for 2024. This will be a low bar.
