Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) indicated Wednesday that House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy may encounter some speed bumps in his quest to become the next House Speaker. He said that the Republican conference must have a “serious discussion” about leadership following Tuesday’s disappointing election results. The midterm elections were disappointing for Republicans. If they win a majority, it will likely be slim. Biggs, a member the House Freedom Caucus, said that Republicans should reevaluate McCarthy’s leadership. He stated that it was not “a foregone conclusion.” 2022 MIDTERM ELCTION RESULTS “I would say maybe not as fast. Biggs suggested that we might have a productive discussion within the confines our internal bodies. “Look, we were told that we would have an amazing, incredible wave. If that were the case, any 20, 30, or 40-seat margin, anywhere you would say, okay Kevin, is the presumptive Republican nominee to be speaker. Biggs said, “But I think that we need to have serious discussions.” “He’s backpedaling on things like impeachment, and in some ways that indicates a willingness be weakening oversight authority that we need and the leverage points that we need in order to deal avec a Democrat President.” KEVIN McARTHY DECLARES GOP WILL TAKE MAJORITY IN HOUSE, PUSHING OUT PELOSI McCarthy declared his candidacy to be House speaker on Wednesday. He argued that flipping the chamber under his leadership “was no small feat.” McCarthy wrote to his GOP colleagues, “This was the most costly and arguably most competitive House midterm ever in America’s History.” “But in a difficult-fought contest our message and our candidates prevailed. Some of these seats were in districts that President Biden had just two years ago by double the numbers.” REPUBLICANS POINTING FIRINGS AFTER WEAK M RESULTS. DIRECTION of PARTY IN THE QUESTION: “SOMETHING WAS OFF” The conservatives in House Freedom Caucus could stand in his way if he believes McCarthy will not vigorously pursue their case against the Biden administration and block the passage of significant spending bills. Biggs, for instance, criticised Republican leadership for failing to hold up the must pass National Defense Authorization Act. The Democratic House majority didn’t have the votes to pass it without GOP support. Biggs stated, “I don’t understand why this is just foregone conclusion.” “I believe we need to have a real conversation and see how people react to the final results of this election. This will allow us to get a sense of his agenda and what he believes he’s going after it.
