MSNBC: Media Treats Elections Like a Game, Democracy Dies If the GOP Wins

On Wednesday night’s editions of The ReidOut on MSNBC, Matthew Dowd, founder of “Country Over Party”, and frequent MSNBC guest, joined Joy Reid in shaming Republicans and applauding President Biden’s speech about the apparent threats to democracy that he alleged the Republican Party poses. Dowd expressed concern about what might happen if Republicans win next Tuesday’s midterm election. Even going so far as to state that if things don’t go according to plan, “we don’t have democracy anymore.”

“They set up the narrative so that if they lose they’re going say all the polls show us winning overwhelmingly. How could we lose? It must have been fixed,” Dowd predicted. He was referring to Republicans, who Dowd apparently believes will contest the outcome of the election if they lose.

Dowd went on to criticize media coverage of elections, and complain that they don’t take sides. “I’m constantly concerned not by you, but by some media coverage which treats this all like a game. These forecasts are like this: “Here’s the odds of that and Republicans could win here, and Democrats could win at there.”

He compared the media to a weatherman covering a hurricane, and said, “Oh, by the way. A hurricane is gonna strike in three days.” Good night, and I’m not going to tell you how it will affect you or what you can do about it.

Dowd complained about the “gamification of politics” and said that the media “not only game it through polls, which the right has done, but they treat this as a game where it doesn’t matter who wins. We’ll just go about our lives.”

Dowd was referring to Biden’s speech about “democracy”: “There is a serious possibility that if this does not go well, then we don’t even have democracy anymore.”

MATTHEW DOWD – I am concerned about two things. David said it very clearly. Just to be clear, Jen and David were on opposite sides of the table. Never hated one another. We have great respect for one another and are now on the same side. This is what I hope all Americans are.

That worries me. They created the narrative so that if they lose they will say all the polls show us winning overwhelmingly. How could we have lost? It had to be fixed. That’s one. Two, I am constantly concerned about you and some media coverage that treats all of this as a game. These forecasts look like this: Here are the odds of this, Republicans could win here, and Democrats could win dort

It’s like a weatherman covering a hurricane and saying, “Oh, by the way, it’s gonna hit in three days.” Good night, and I won’t tell you how it will affect you or what you can do about it. The gamification and gamification of politics. It’s not just gamified through polls, which the right has done, but the media treat this as a game where it doesn’t matter who wins.

We’ll just go about our lives. I hope the President stated tonight that there is a real chance that this won’t go smoothly and that the World Series will be on in 15 minutes. By the way, Phillies. What’s more American than baseball, you ask? Democracy. That’s what’s at stake here.
