TIME Fears a Trump Return to Twitter

TIME concealed key facts and twisted other details in a story that worried about former President Donald Trump’s possible return to Twitter.

Many people expressed hope that Trump will return to Twitter after Tesla CEO Elon Musk bought it. However, Trump has stated that he will not. TIME published a piece slamming the possibility.

TIME reported that Trump had tweeted about the Capitol “riot” that “These events and things happen” when an election win “is stripped away.” He also said that his supporters should “go home and remember this day forever.” Twitter then suspended Trump, which turned into a ban and alleged that there was “the risk of further violence incitement.”

TIME didn’t mention that Trump’s Jan. 6th 2021 speech specifically called for a peaceful and patriotic protest, and that Trump also tweeted another call to peace and an end of rioting at the Capitol events. Trump’s tweet video in which he said “Go home” was part of his call to “peace.” He never called for violence on Twitter.

TIME noted that Trump’s message was still getting out through rallies, interviews and press releases. TIME noted that Trump’s current “megaphone”, while it is still a sound, is nothing compared to his Twitter presence.

TIME screeched, “Should Trump get right back on Twitter? He would regain a platform he has already shown he’s willingly to use to incite or justify violence.”

One silver lining was found by the outlet. “At the exact same time, Trump’s disruptive messaging would remind voters about the most chaotic days in his four-year tenure, which could demoralize his support among independents, and energize Democratic voters.”

TIME cited a 2019 Politico/Morning Consult Poll that found 60 percent of voters thought Trump’s Twitter use was a “bad thing” and 70 percent thought Trump “used Twitter too much.”

TIME ignored Trump’s Jan. 6 calls for peace and said that concerns about Trump’s potential violence and disruption of the election “haven’t been resolved.”

TIME cited the attack on Nancy Pelosi, Democrat House Speaker, by Paul as an example social media-fueled violence. However, no evidence has linked Pelosi’s attacker to conservative politics or MAGA Social Media “extremists.”

TIME concluded by quoting Timothy Naftali, a New York University presidential historian, who claimed, without evidence, that “The former president with the words he spoke before January 6 heated up this nation, motivated disturbed individuals into violence. Will we see more of that when Donald Trump is back on Twitter?”
