ine Escalation? // (John Hinderaker)

Although the war in Ukraine appears to be less of a concern, it is still something to be concerned about. The Secretary-General for NATO sees a “real chance” that there will be an all-out war between Russia, NATO allies.

The head of the military alliance warned that there is a real possibility that the conflict in Ukraine could escalate into a full-scale war between Russia and NATO.

“I fear that Ukraine’s war will get outof control, and spread to a major war between Nato, Russia,” Jens Stoltenberg, secretary-general of NATO, said in response to a question about his biggest fears for winter. ***

The ex-prime minister of Norway stressed the importance of continuing military support for Ukraine, but did not comment on whether NATO member states should agree with more advanced, long-range offensive weaponsry.

Some argue that such weapons are necessary to help Ukraine end the war sooner, while others worry that they could increase the conflict and lead to a confrontation between Russia and the Nato states.

We have then this headline from the London Times : “Pentagon gives Ukraine greenlight for drone strikes in Russia.”

The Pentagon has updated its threat assessment for the war in Ukraine since October’s daily attacks on civilians. This includes new assessments about whether arms shipments from Kyiv could lead to a military confrontation with Russia and NATO.

This is a significant development in the nine-month war with Russia and Ukraine. Washington will likely supply Kyiv now with longer-range weapons.

The fear of escalation could escalate dramatically if the US decides that it will supply Ukraine with longer-range weapons that can strike deeper into Russia. Officials from the Pentagon have stated that Kyiv is considering requests for longer-range US weapons such as rockets and fighter bombers, which could be used to strike even harder inside Russia or occupied Crimea.

A senior US defense official stated that “Nothing is off the Table”.

I am generally a hawk and not necessarily averse using military force against our adversaries if necessary. Is it wrong to be concerned that we might be sleepingwalking into a major conflict that is not proportional to the American interests at stake?
