The correct question is “Who in their right mind would want a Minneapolis cop?” I’ve asked this question more than once on Power Line, often while watching the Star Tribune’s generous contributions to the climate that is shrinking police departments.
The Star Tribune published an op-ed column today asking “Who would like to be a Minneapolis police officer?” This is not the right question. It’s too late to ask the question. The answer is a study of willful stupidity.
Freelance writer and consultant for nonpartisan education nonprofit iCivics Richard Harris says that the department’s staffing problems are due to a shortage of exit interviews. Harris writes:
It is unfathomable that the MPD has not done a thorough survey to find out why only a third have returned their badges in the past three years, despite the fact that public safety is at stake and many other responsibilities.
We have failure to communicate. It’s almost comical.
