ously Washington? // (Steven Hayward)
This headline does not refer to chaos in the House of Representatives.
It refers to the latest scandal of the NFL team, formerly known as The Redskins. Richard Samuelson points to the fact that the “Washington Football Team”, as it was known over the past three seasons, decided to change its name to “The Commanders”. This is fitting considering the age of Washington’s administrative state, which prefers to rule by orders to democratic deliberation. Is it just a coincidence that Washington Senators, named for “the greatest deliberative body in the world”, left town in the 1960s and changed their name?
The Commanders came up with a mascot. It is impossible to believe, but you have to see it.
It was at first my impression that this was a parody. But it is real! It’s a perfect mascot for a city full of pork barrel-spending pigs. Better still, a swamp rat.
Yes, I do know that this is supposed to refer to the Redskins offensive line from 30 years ago, also known as “the Hogs”, but how many current Redskins fans can recall that? I doubt the Commanders had any idea of this. Just like Washington DC diktats.
