A woman interrupted Adams during a town hall held by him at a Washington Heights high school to complain that “he raised the rent.”
Adams asked her to get up and then insisted he did not “control the [Rent Guidelines Board].
The elderly woman continued to press for an answer regarding the rising rent by saying, “You previously said and after that, supported those rent increases!”
Adams snapped and began to reprimand the woman for pointing him and speaking in a frustrated voice.
Adams said, “First, when you ask me a question, please don’t disrespect me by pointing at me or addressing me in a disrespectful manner.” “I am the mayor of this town. Treat me with the respect I deserve.” “I’m talking to you as an adults.”

“Don’t treat someone on your plantation like you would someone else.”
“Give me respect that I deserve… Treat [me] with the same respect you treat me,” Adams continued. “I’m an adult.” I entered this room as an adult, and I will leave this room as an adult.

Adams’ remarks received both praise and criticism.
Some people applauded Mayor for standing up to himself.
“Good job, Mayor,” tweeted a Twitter user. “This isn’t 1950’s Alabama. It’s New York City 2023, and you wouldn’t have an attitude like that towards a prominent Black male. Ask your question with respect and you will get a respectful response.”
Others condemned him for avoiding a question by bringing in race, accusing the woman to act like a “plantation-owner.”
One Twitter user stated, “She was not disrespectful.” She is a disgruntled person, and to speak down to them like that is very, very concerning.
Some people commented that Adams acted like he was above the citizens he was supposed to serve.
“He forgot that *literally*, he is a public servant and not a king,” tweeted one Twitter user.
Another said, “He is a race-baiting crook. He still hasn’t answered her questions or given an answer FOR his ineptitude. He works FOR HER and not the other way round.
