Republicans in the Senate Accept Compromises To Stop Wokeness In The Military In Defense Spending Bill

In the substantial$ 886.3 billion defense budget that is already being voted on in Congress, Republicans won a little-noticed victory this week. Democrats agreed to cut funding for woke diversity, equity, and inclusion( DEI ) programs in the military after being likely forced to make concessions to Republicans in order to pass the House military budget.
Senator Roger Wicker ( R – Ms. ) stated after the bill passed the Armed Services Committee that” the Pentagon must remain focused on deterrence rather than a toxic and divisive social agenda.”
Republicans are still working to pass additional legislation into the defense spending bill that would define equity for military purposes as” the right of all persons to have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from, programs, and activities for which they are qualified.”
Additionally, the bill caps pay for Pentagon diversity officers and mandates that the Pentagon disclose how much money is spent on DEI training for contractors working for the Department of Defense.

Another Republican attempts to stifle” woke” efforts were rejected after they were unable to secure the required number of votes.
Senator Joni Ernst( R-Ia ) attempted to change a policy that covers the travel costs for adult service members to get an abortion, but the proposal was rejected in committee and was replaced with something more restrained.

Republican criticism that such efforts are detrimental to military readiness led to the defense legislation that was approved by a crucial Senate committee on Thursday. It aims to restrict the Pentagon’s spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ).
After hammering out its annual defense policy bill on Wednesday and Thursday behind closed doors, the Senate Armed Services Committee approved an$ 886.3 billion defense budget for 2024, according to a summary of the legislation that was made public on Friday. The summary and GOP senators praised provisions they claimed would hold the DEI bureaucracy in the Pentagon accountable and ensure servicemembers are treated on the basis of ability, not race or gender, even though the committee has not yet published the full text of the bill. However, it does not appear to specifically address any ongoing DeI programs in a Department of Defense ( DOD ) program.
