Dems Push For Supreme Court Justices to Have Term Limits Following Rulings That Didn’t Align With Their Political Views

Democratic lawmakers are calling for term limits for the Supreme Court justices after recent rulings that favored Conservative views held by the Republican Party.
Democrats have complained that the Supreme Court’s term limits are unfair after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against President Joe Biden’s plan to forgive student loans and end affirmative action in college admissions.
On Monday, Reps. Ro. Khanna (D.Calif.) and Don Beyer(D.Va.), announced the reintroduction a bill titled the Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act that they claimed would “rebalance the court” and “stop extreme partisanship.”
Khanna said that the Supreme Court’s decision blocking student debt relief would put many hardworking Americans in danger of defaulting and would be a disaster to our economy.
The California Rep. said that “Our Founding fathers intended lifetime appointments to ensure neutrality.” “The decision today shows how justices are out of touch with the American people and partisan.”

“I am proud to reintroduce the Supreme Court Term Limits and Regular Appointments Act in order to implement term limitations to rebalance and stop extreme partisanship.”
Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif.In an interview with The Guardian Khanna called the Supreme Court “out of touch,” and said, “It is a court which is regressive. It is rolling back women’s rights, rights about racial equalities, rolling backing environmental protections, and now rolling back assistance for young people.”
Rep. Beyer echoed Khanna’s claim that SCOTUS was too politically biased.
Beyer said that “for many Americans, the Supreme Court represents a distant, secretive and unelected body which can make drastic changes to their lives without any accountability.” “Recent partisan Supreme Court decisions that destroyed historic protections of reproductive rights, voting right and more have undermined the public’s trust in the Court.
Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va. Joe Biden is also a critic of the Supreme Court’s recent rulings. Biden was asked during an interview with MSNBC if he was worried that “without court-reform, this conservative majority may be too young and conservative, or that they could do too much damage?”
Biden said, “Well, they may not do much harm. But, if we try to expand the court we will politicize it forever, in a way you cannot get back.
