Forgiving Criminals On Behalf of Dead Victims

You may recall this tale from earlier this year about a woman who was killed while attempting to apprehend an armed robber. Her friends insisted that because she was interested in social justice, she would never have wanted him to serve time in prison. According to her close friends, Jen Angel, a well-liked native bakery owner and activist in the social justice community, passed away on Thursday from wounds she sustained during the violent robbery. She was 48.
After the heinous crime, Jen’s loved ones wrote on a GoFundMe page that she did not believe in state violence, coercive punishment, or incarceration as an efficient or only solution to interpersonal violence and inequity. Jen had long been an anarchist and interpersonal movement activist.
According to the post, her family is” determined to pursuing all options other than conventional prosecution, such as restorative justice.”
The family continued,” We know Jen would not want to continue the cycle of harm by bringing state-sanctioned violence to those responsible for her death or to other wealthy Oakland residents.” The fad is reaching celebrities. Michael K. Williams, an actor for” The Wire ,” was sentenced to just two and a half years in prison on Tuesday after the judge agreed to show mercy to one of the drug dealers involved in his overdose death.
Simon asked Abrams to be gentle with Macci earlier this month, pointing out that Williams” bears the fuller responsibility” and opposing the war on drugs and mass incarceration.
Macci has been incarcerated for roughly one and a half years, despite having 23 earlier drug convictions. Whatever Michael K. Williams may have thought in the abstract, he, like Jen, might have had different ideas as she passed away. It is offensive that people are now forgiving criminals in light of the alleged political affiliations of their victims. No one has a right to forgive in the name of the deceased because doing so is risky business. In addition, we prosecute criminals for potential harm in addition to the harm they caused, putting aside their political views. The lives of potential victims are likewise in jeopardy. There is no” pick the punishment for your offender” system in place here. Instead, we have established laws that are imperative and based on the offense. or we should, at the very least.

According to her closest friends, Jen Angel, a beloved local baker and social justice activist, died Thursday of injuries she sustained in a violent robbery. She was 48…
After the brutal crime, her loved ones wrote: “As a social movement activist, Jen was an anarchist who did not believe that state violence, carceral penalties or incarceration were effective or just solutions to social violence and injustice.”
The post stated that her family was “committed” to exploring all alternatives to traditional prosecutions, such as restorative Justice.
The trend is spreading among celebrities. One of the drug dealers linked to the overdose death “The Wire’s” actor Michael K. Williams received a sentence of just two-and a-half years Tuesday after HBO show co-creator David Simon requested the judge to show mercy.
Simon asked Abrams earlier this month to be gentle with Macci. He said that Williams “bears a greater responsibility” and noted his actor friend’s opposition to the war on drugs and mass incarceration.
Macci, who has 23 prior drug convictions, has been locked up for about a year-and-a-half.Whatever Michael K. Williams believed in the abstract, he, like Jen, might have had other thoughts while dying. This trend where people forgive criminals in the name of the politics that their victims allegedly had is obscene. No one has the right to forgive someone else in their name. Speaking in the names of the dead can be risky and no one should ever forgive anyone in their name. We also have to consider the future lives of victims. We have clear laws and objective prosecutions that are based on the crime. Or at least, we should.
