Oregon’s woke hiking groups have created segregated paths for people of colour so that they don’t need to worry about meeting someone who is “prejudiced.”
Tyrone Wilson, a black actor at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, goes hiking as a volunteer on his days off. Wilson is a founder of ‘Unlikely Hikers’, ‘OutGrown’, and ‘People of Color Outdoors’
On its website, Unlikely Hikers describes itself as a “diverse and anti-racist outdoor community featuring underrepresented outdoorspersons.” It is for “adventurers that are plus-size and fat, Black, Indigenous and People of Color; queer, non-binary and transgender; disabled, neurodivergent and beyond.”
According to Oregon Live’s report, Wilson’s group “want to make public recreational land feel more welcoming for people who are more scared of encountering someone with a bias than a mountain-lion.”
Oregon hikers need to be more aware of mountain lions, as they live in a state with the highest mountain lion populations in the United States.

Wilson told Oregon Live: “I am not a hiker. I don’t fit the stereotype of a hiker in terms of culture, appearance, or anything else that is traditionally associated with huddling.” “I’ve tried my best to get people to join Monday Hike, even if they don’t consider themselves outdoorsy. It’s been a real struggle.”

All people should, of course, feel that they can hike and enjoy the natural world. Wilson’s labeling of certain groups as “unlikely hikers” perpetuates a stereotype, that certain people will not be accepted by the hiking community. This makes people feel they have to overcome barriers or join an exclusive group to participate in outdoor activities.
It is absurd to create trails for only minority hikers. Segregating hiking paths further divides the U.S. by race and identity.
