Louisiana Town Evacuated After Chemical Leak, Fire at Refinery

A chemical leak and fire at the Garyville, Louisiana, Marathon Petroleum refinery were attended to by emergency personnel. Marathon Petroleum issued a statement saying that the fire and release were contained on the property of the refinery and that there had been no injuries.
Around 2 pm, the evacuation order was lifted.

Officials from the parish said that the evacuation order was lifted shortly after 2 pm. According to Marathon officials, the fire, which affected 2 tanks, had been brought under control.
Justin Lawrence, spokesperson for Marathon, said that the burning material was naphtha. This is a liquid hydrocarbon mix used to make gasoline. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration considers naphtha hazardous because it is extremely flammable and irritating to the respiratory system and eyes, and can be fatal if swallowed.
By midday, parents were in line to pick up their children at East St. John High School, located nearby Reserve. Parents who lived in the evacuation zone had to leave, even though the school was outside of it. Riverside Academy students were also evacuated to Lake Pontchartrain School, while Garyville Magnet students were taken there.

WDSU has provided the complete statement from Marathon Petroleum.
“Marathon Petroleum personnel are working with local emergency responders to contain a naphtha leak and fire in a storage tank of the company’s Garyville refinery, Louisiana. The fire and release are contained on the property of the refinery and no injuries have been reported. As a precautionary measure, air monitoring was deployed in the locality. No off-site effects have been detected.
“All regulatory notifications were made. Our main priority is always to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees, contractors, neighbors, and first responders in our community and to minimize environmental impact. “An investigation will be carried out to determine the cause of this release.”
