Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ Found in Paper Straws, Study Says

A study found that paper straws contain potentially harmful chemicals that are dangerous to people, wildlife, and the environment, according to a Sky News report. The study reportedly discovered that paper straws contain poly – and perfluoroalkyl substances( PFAS ), despite being thought of as the environmentally friendly plastic straw substitute.
JUST IN- According to a study, paper straws that are deemed” eco-friendly” may contain harmful chemicals that could endanger people, wildlife, and the environment.

PFAS, also referred to as” everlasting chemicals ,” can cause health issues like thyroid disease, obesity, fertility issues, and cancer.
Written by the Harvard School of Public Health:
Perfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFASs, which are found in everything from firefighting foams to nonstick cookware to carpets may be little more dangerous to human health than previously believed.

A recent study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention( CDC) describes a variety of health effects linked to PFAS exposure, such as cancer, liver damage, decreased fertility, and an elevated risk of thyroid and asthma disease. The CDC recommends an exposure limit for one PFAS compound that is 10 times lower than the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency limit, according to a ProPublica article published on June 20, 2018.

Sky News had the breaking news:
In the ground-breaking Western study, 18 out of 20 brands of paper straws contained PFAS, with a lower frequency of detection in plastic and glass versions. Straws made from various materials from fast-food restaurants and shops were analyzed.
The study did not examine whether PFAS leaked into the liquids from the straws.
Perfluorooctanoic acid( PFOA ), the most frequently found PFAS, has been outlawed globally since 2020.
None of the steel straws tested contained any PFAS traces.
Since straw use is uncommon, the Belgian researchers claimed that the lower PFAS concentrations posed a small risk to human health.
But, they cautioned that over time, the body could become infected with chemicals.
After being found in drinking straws sold in the US, Dr. Thimo Groffen from the University of Antwerp stated that the researchers wanted to determine whether PFAS was present in Belgian plant-based straw products.
Following the study, Groffen advised against using paper and bamboo straws following the discovery of PFAS.
He advised” avoid using straws at all ,” according to the outlet.

The study found that paper sips contain poly-and perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), despite being considered an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic straws.

Sky News has reported that paper straws labeled “eco-friendly”, contain potentially toxic chemicals, which could pose a threat to people, wildlife, and the environment.

PFAS (also known as “forever chemicals”) can cause health problems, such as thyroid diseases, obesity, fertility problems, and cancer.
Harvard School of Public Health:
The health risks of a group of chemicals called perfluoroalkyl compounds, or PFASs — used in everything from nonstick cookware to carpets to firefighting foams — may be much greater than previously thought.

Sky News has the scoop.
The European study, which was the first of its kind, analysed straws from fast-food restaurants as well as shops. It found that 18 of 20 paper straw brands contained PFAS. Plastic and glass straws were less likely to contain PFAS.
The research did NOT examine whether PFAS escaped from the straws and into the liquids.
Since 2020, the most common PFAS found in the environment, perfluorooctanoic (PFOA) acid, has been banned worldwide.
No traces of PFAS were detected in any steel straws that were tested.
The Belgian researchers found that PFAS concentrations are low, and since straw is rarely used, they pose a limited health risk.
However, they warned that the chemicals can accumulate in the body for many years.
Sky News reported that “Dr Thimo Grffen, from University of Antwerp said the researchers wanted find out if PFAS was in plant-based straws sold to consumers in Belgium after they were found in straws in the US.”
Groffen discouraged paper and bamboo straws following the study.
The outlet reported that he advised “to avoid using straws at any time.”
