Airline Captain Becomes Incapacitated During Flight’s Descent

According to The Aviation Herald, the captain of an Austrian Airlines flight began to feel ill and lost his ability to fly during the descent into Vienna.

According to The Aviation Herald:
When the captain of an Austrian Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration OE-LZA, carrying flight OS-188 from Stuttgart, Germany, to Vienna, Austria, began to feel sick, the aircraft was en route at 310 and was getting close to the top of descent towards Vienna. The second officer took control of the aircraft, continued the descent toward Vienna, and intercepted the localizer for runway 34 as the captain became incapacitated while descending towards Vienna. The captain was ready to resume his duties after intercepting the glidepath. On runway 34, the aircraft continued to land safely.
The second officer assumed control of the aircraft and descended toward Vienna after the captain became exhausted. The plane made a safe landing, according to William Makis.
Makis has investigated fatalities and incapacitations of airline pilots.

Eric McRae, a pilot based in Seattle, appears to be the dying person.

I’m sharing the loss of one of our individual with a great deal of sadness.
Captain Eric McRae, based in Seattle, cruelly passed away yesterday while on a layover. We have no reason to believe foul play was involved, despite the fact that it was entirely sudden and unexpected.
Eric has strong ties to the Alaska Airlines family. Eric, an Alaska Airlines flight attendant, and his wife Chael had two lovely younger children together. Eric was a proud father. His father is retired Captain Tom McRae of Alaska.
We won’t be giving Eric’s family any more information at this time out of respect for their need for peace and time to grieve. We’ll keep doing everything we can to help the family.
If or when a service is scheduled, we will let the family know in accordance with their preferences.

Austrian Airlines Airbus A320 200, registration OE – LZA, performing flight OS – 188 from Stuttgart (Germany), to Vienna (Austria), en route at 310 was nearing the top descent towards Vienna when captain started feeling unwell. The captain was incapacitated while descending towards Vienna. The first officer took over control of the aircraft and continued the descent to Vienna, intercepting the localizer for runway number 34. After intercepting the glidepath, the captain recovered his strength and was able resume his duties. The aircraft continued to land safely on runway 34.

It appears that the deceased is Seattle-based pilot Eric McRae.

It is with great sadness that I share the loss of a member of our family.
Yesterday, Seattle-based Captain Eric McRae tragically died during a layover. Although completely unexpected and untimely, we have no reason for suspicion that foul play was involved.
Eric’s ties with the Alaska Airlines family are strong. Eric was a proud dad and shared two beautiful children with his wife Chael who is an Alaska Airlines Flight Attendant. His father, retired Alaska Captain Tom McRae, is a proud father.
We will not share any more details for the time being, out of respect for Eric’s family and their need for time to grieve. We will continue to provide support in any way we can.
We will inform you if / when there is a planned service based on your family’s wishes.
