The former governor maintained his position when Welker followed up by asking Christie if he would” rule it out totally.” ” Indeed, I have. I have throughout my whole professional life, he claimed. ” When Frank Lautenberg passed away and I was governor, I had the opportunity to appoint myself to the United States Senate, Kristen.” ” I sure as hell am not going to run for it if I didn’t appoint myself to the United States Senate, the simplest way to get there.” WATCH: Fmr. Christie’s comments were made just days after Menendez was charged with corruption by national prosecutors, who claimed that the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations and his wife had accepted bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for favors he had granted through the use of his position. Investigators claimed that in addition to the$ 500,000 in cash discovered at the Menendez residence, they also discovered over$ 100,000 worth of gold bars that were allegedly given by the senator and his wife by their New Jersey business partners. An Iranian American who was accused of providing the Egyptian government with sensitive information from Menendez was one of those partners. Democrats are among the growing number of lawmakers who are urging Menendez to resign from the Senate. Menendez, a first-generation Latino American, has denied the accusations and claims that the indictment is the result of an effort to remove him from his Senate seat. The Democrat has stated that he will not resign from his position as senator despite his plans to leave his leadership position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to a fresh NBC poll, Christie is still far behind former President Donald Trump, who despite facing numerous indictments is leading the GOP primary by more than 40 points. Trump is the front-runner in that poll of 59 % of federal Democratic primary voters, followed by Florida governor. Ron DeSantis, Mike Pence, past vice president, and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley. Christie emphasized that he is closer to the former president when examining specific states after finding himself 55 points behind Trump in the national poll. # 13 of the advertisement
