How Fox News Could Change Now That Rupert Murdoch Is Stepping Aside

The Australian media mogul passed the torch on to his eldest child, Lachlan. But that’s not likely to change the trajectory of the conservative network.

Rupert Murdoch, an Australian news tycoon, stunned the media on Thursday when he announced his resignation as chairman of Fox Corp., the company that is the parent of News Corp and Fox News. His eldest son Lachlan, who will continue to serve as Fox Corp. ‘ s executive chair and CEO, will succeed him, the company announced in a press release. A former Fox executive told Vanity Fair about Rupert’s choice, saying,” I never thought he’d do it.” Although Murdoch, 92, is withdrawing from both companies, experts predict that Lachlan, who is even more ideologically hard-right than his father, will continue to have an impact on the liberal media landscape. In the interim, Rupert will continue to act as chairman emeritus. # 13 of the advertisement
He stated in an inner memo to staff,” Our companies are in strong health, as am I.” ” Our opportunities far outweigh our business difficulties.” Despite Rupert’s assurances to employees, his companies still face significant challenges, if only as a result of the print and cable news industries’ continued decline. Nevertheless, we have every reason to be optimistic about the upcoming years. In the meantime, Fox has come under fire for its coverage of the 2020 presidential election. Murdoch stated that he anticipates continuing to participate in the normal” contest of ideas” and contribute to the discussion. Employees were informed by Murdoch that he would be keeping a critical eye on our broadcasts, reading our newspapers, websites, and books with great interest, as well as getting in touch with you to share his thoughts, ideas, or advice. # 13 of the advertisement
Why Right Today? As the 2024 election cycle begins, Murdoch’s decision to make a proper announcement about his transition to his new role has sparked concerns. Lachlan himself had previously stated that his father would” never” retire, after all. And even then, Rupert has made a point of saying that he has no intention of disappearing. In a piece titled” The Rupert Murdoch Retirement Myth ,” senior media writer Jack Shafer from Poland argues why we should disregard Thursday’s announcement. Shafer writes,” The notion that Murdoch would abdicate his position of authority before he passes away defies everything we know about him.” However, it’s also true that Murdoch hasn’t seemed to be as constantly involved in the day-to-day operations of the company for the past two or three years.” The idea that he would give up power even after his death is extremely absurd.” Advertising &# 13,
For the magazine’s” Inside the Hive” podcast, Gabriel Sherman, a special correspondent for Vanity Fair, informed Brian Stelter that” Rupert has been properly semi-retired for years” and that he hardly ever enters the office. The announcement from this week, if anything, strengthens Lachlan’s position as the leader of the two businesses. The senior Murdoch wrote in his note to staff,” My father firmly believed in freedom, and Lachlan is totally committed to the cause.” This, in Shafer’s opinion, is the most logical justification for the action. Shafer wrote,” The announcement can only make sense if he intended it to elevate the status of his chosen heir … so as to advance it along Rupert’s charted path.” The mysterious note from Murdoch to the staff photo. He is believed to be more right-wing than Rupert, which would dispel any naive belief that his resignation will ultimately alter Fox’s personality or course. # 13 of the advertisement
In his autobiography” Making Headlines ,” Chris Mitchell, a former editor-in-chief of the newspaper The Australian, claimed that Lachlan’s conservatism is” typically to the right of his fathers’ views” and” more vigorous than that of any Australian politician.” What if Rupert Murdoch disappears? If Rupert passes away, his four oldest children, who don’t both subscribe to their father’s liberal ideology, will receive his voting shares at Fox Corp. and News Corporation. For instance, James Murdoch reportedly left Fox Corp. in July 2020, citing” disagreements over certain editorial content published by the Company’s news outlets and certain other strategic decisions.” James and his wife Kathryn also supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and gave$ 100 million to social organizations through their foundation during that election cycle. When Rupert passes away, tech journalist Kara Swisher, who previously worked for the Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal, predicted that the businesses would probably be sold and that Lachlan’s other children would be unlikely to support him. # 13 of the advertisement
Swisher even made the speculative claim that Elon Musk, a billionaire, might buy. Prediction: The crown prince’s reign will be brief; after the old man passes away, the other siblings will take advantage of the situation and sell everything( Elon )? Right-leaning media organization or a PE firm? The network has already lost millions of dollars as a result of Fox’s decision to support former President Donald Trump in his false statements about the 2020 election. https :// t.co / Nkvlp2vvjS — Kara Swisher(@ karaswishers) September 21, 2023 On the day they were about to go to court earlier this year, the network reached a last-minute$ 787.5 settlement with voting technology company Dominion Voting Systems. Dominion had filed a defamation lawsuit against Fox News for spreading unfounded rumors that it had assisted Biden in stealing the presidency. The sizeable settlement protected the traditional network from what was anticipated to be a very terrible trial that would have featured best brass, including Rupert Murdoch himself, testifying. Future legal actions against the network include a$ 2.7 billion defamation lawsuit brought by another voting technology company, Smartmatic USA. Advertising &# 13,
Rupert may be resigning in part to avoid giving a testimony in that case, according to some theories. According to Paul Blumenthal of HuffPost, the company even runs the risk of losing the broadcasting licenses granted by the Federal Communications Commission to its regional broadcast network affiliates. These difficulties, along with the cable television industry’s continued decline, foretell a troubled future for the network. America was permanently altered by Rupert’s Legacy At Fox, where Roger Ailes was given the task of starting a cable TV network in 1996 that was modeled after talk radio and hosts like Rush Limbaugh. Fox News eagerly pursued the culture wars and reshaped American political discourse in its own image, according to Slate’s Justin Peters,” while CNN brought its viewers worldwide coverage and took the news part of its name very significantly.” Sherman even considered what Rupert Murdoch’s reign at the top of his media empire has meant for him personally. Peters contends that Fox won’t change because” he is, after all, his fathers son.” # 13 of the advertisement
Sherman stated in” Inside the Hive” that” Everything he touched ended up being destroyed.” In Rupert Murdoch’s” Dishonest” Letter,” He Got The Power That He Wanted, But At The Cost Of, You Know, Both His Family And The World At Large ,” Critics Spot Most” Gaslighting” Line.” RelatedFox NewsNews Corp ,”” Lachlan murdoch, News Corp. Lachlan, the eldest son of the American media tycoon, has taken the reins, but that is unlikely to alter the liberal network’s course.

Die Kommission wird in der Lage sein, im Einklang mit Artikel 264 Beschlüsse zu folgenden Fragen zu fassen: On Thursday, Rupert Murdoch, the Australian media mogul, shook up the news industry by publicly announcing his decision to step down and resign from his position as chairman of Fox Corp. The parent corporation of Fox News is News Corp. Lachlan, the eldest son of the current chair, will be taking over and will be running News Corp as the only chair. He will stay in his position as executive chairperson and chief executive officer at Fox Corporation. “It was declared in a press release that Rupert Murdoch was going to step away from his companies,” told an ex-Fox exec to Vanity Fair regarding Rupert’s decision. Although Rupert Murdoch, who is now in his 92nd year, is reduced in his occupation of his companies, many think his effect on the right-wing media will be upheld by Lachlan, who is alleged to be more conservative than his father. Rupert will continue to be the honorary chairman. In an internal memo to employees, he wrote that both his business and he himself were in a good state.
