Boxes of Pokémon Cards Were Almost Thrown Away But Have Since Raised $50,000 for Family

“Dad planned to throw them away, but I said, ‘Blimey, dad, some of these might be worth a bit’.” The 81-year old grandfather is now putting up the unopened box for auction next week, and it is expected to fetch twenty thousand dollars. “Dad was going to throw them out, but I said ‘Blimey dad, some of these cards might be worth a little’.” The 81-year old grandfather is now putting the unopened box up for auction next Monday, and it is expected to fetch at least twenty thousand dollars. We decided to sell the rest. The seller’s daughter remembered her own daughter and father going on weekend trips to a hobby store in Chester, England to get the cards. The shop employee suggested they buy boxes instead of individual packs, which worked out well for both parties. David Wilson-Turner explained why the boxes are so rare. The 102 cards in the 36 sealed boosters packs bear a date stamp that states 1999-2000. Other base set cards have a date stamp of 1999. “My dad was an avid collector and kept the cards in pristine condition.” It seems absurd that a box could be worth this much. In 1999, paying PS100-120 for a box of cards was a lot of cash for a working class man. Before the Englishman’s 50-year-old daughter suggested they might be for some money, the pile of Pokémon cards was on the verge of being thrown in the trash.
