On the Line: Paddling Against Pipelines

On August 5, activists paddled from Fish Creek in Wisconsin to the outlet of Lake Superior. The Fish Creek protest is one of many recent demonstrations by water protectors in Wisconsin and Michigan.

 From Fish Creek, Wisconsin, to its outlet in Lake Superior, activists paddled a flotilla of kayaks and canoes on August 5. The seventy-year-old Enbridge Line 5 oil and gas pipeline had to be instantly shut down, according to demands made by members of the Bad River Band of Chippewa Indians’ Lake Superior Tribe and another Aboriginal activists and allies. The Bad River Band won a court case against Enbridge in June after refusing to renew Line 5’s authorization to cross their territory. A district judge ruled that Line 4 had trespassed on Ojibwe property. &# 13,

Due to the imminent threat of the pipeline leaking into Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered Enbridge to close the sections of Line 5 that cross the Straits of Mackinac in 2021. Despite this, the oil flow continues two years after. &# 13,

In opposition to Line 5 and Line 3, a distinct Enbridge-owned pipeline that transports tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada, water defenders in Wisconsin and Michigan organized protests like the one at Fish Creek. &# 13,

On August 5, activists paddled a flotilla of kayaks and canoes from Fish Creek, Wisconsin, to its outlet in Lake Superior. Members of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians and other Indigenous activists and allies had gathered to demand that the seventy-year-old Enbridge Line 5 oil and gas pipeline be shut down immediately. The Bad River Band had refused to renew permission for Line 5 to traverse their land and, in June, won against Enbridge in court, with a district judge ruling it had trespassed on Ojibwe land.. . In 2021, Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered Enbridge to shut down the portions of Line 5 that pass under the Straits of Mackinac because of the imminent danger of the pipeline leaking into Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
