Turkey’s President Takes Step To Move Along Sweden’s NATO Membership Bid

Recep Tayyip Erdoan accused Stockholm of being soft on Kurdish militants, and other groups that he deems as security threats.

 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan submitted a protocol for Sweden’s ratification into NATO to the Greek parliament, according to his office on Monday. All 31 NATO allies are required to support Sweden’s membership. Hungary and Turkey have not already ratified it. When Sweden’s membership would be called to the floor was not immediately known. After President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine in February 2022 in order to seek protection under NATO’s security umbrella, Sweden and its neighbor Finland gave up decades of martial nonalignment. Finland formally ratified the defense pact in April. Following President Vladimir Putin’s command for Russian troops to march into Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden and Finland cast aside decades of non-participation in combat, choosing to rely on the safety NATO can provide. In April, Finland joined the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) alliance, along with Turkey and Sweden. Mitch McConnell is in favor of Biden’s demand for a $106 billion package to separately support Israel and Ukraine. Joe Biden has proposed an allocation of $100 billion to provide assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip. A Russian-American journalist has been accused of breaking Russian law by not registering as a foreign agent.
