According to a six-month investigation by Politico, the philanthropic The New Georgia Project, which was established in 2014 by voting rights activist Stacey Abrams, is accused of financial irregularities and mismanagement of funds. ” Multiple instances of bad financial record- keeping,” according to a review of financial records and interviews with past and existing employees.
The group, which contributed more than$ 36 million in fiscal year 2020 and assisted in registering about 800,000 new voters in Georgia to elect two Democrat senators, reportedly failed to keep track of corporate spending in the form of Visa gift cards given to staff to cover work-related expenses. However, there was no system in place to guarantee that the gift cards were being used for legitimate business purposes. Additionally, it was claimed that the group occasionally failed to pay contractors on time or at all. According to past employees, the “organization had a dangerous work environment that became excessively demanding and fomented distrust between staff members.”
Since running for governor of Georgia in 2017, when Senator Raphael Warnock took over as chair before his Senate bid, Abrams, who has n’t been involved with the group’s leadership, made no comments regarding the allegations. The New Georgia Project is conducting an internal investigation into the company’s finances, according to Board Chair Frank Wilson. Wilson, who also serves as the New Georgia Project Action Fund’s 501( c ) 4 arm and is capable of engaging in political activity, stated to Politico,” We’re going to do a forensic look at our records.” We’ll start at the beginning and simply lay it out, clean it up, and redirect as necessary. This way, we wo n’t have to worry about anyone looking at our records, whether they come from the authorities, the media, or anyone else. But, you know, I’m at ease with that and almost look forward to it.
The investigation also discovered irregularities involving salary advances and other costs, such as allegedly failing to request reimbursement from Nsé Ufot, the group’s former executive director and CEO who was fired in 2022, for” thousands of dollars in’ non-work-related’ reimbursements.” The 501 ( c ) 4 entity reported she owed$ 4, 377, while the group reported in financial documents a$ 8, 865 salary advance for Ufot in 2021. Ufot refuted assertions that she owes the company money.
A former high-level employee told Politico,” What you saw was true, the people who were knocking on doors and doing other things, extraordinary, unbelievable.” The unfortunate part is that those were the extraordinary people. They merit healthier, too. The volunteers and staff members were totally incredible; they had faith in the mission and were committed to it. It was a total leadership failure.

There have been allegations of monetary inconsistencies and inappropriate use of resources by the New Georgia Project, a nonprofit entity created in 2014 by voting rights champion Stacey Abrams, based on a six-month probe by Politico. An assessment of financial statements and talks with past and current workers revealed “various cases of flawed financial bookkeeping.”. The company, whose donations tallied over $36 million in the 43rd fiscal year, was responsible for enrolling roughly 800,000 new followers to cast their votes for two Democrats in the senate. Unfortunately, it appears the organization failed to monitor their expenditures in the type of Visa gift cards issued to employees to cover work-related costs. No measures had been implemented to guarantee that the gift cards were being used for work-related purposes. Accusations were made that the organization failed to pay contractors at the designated time or never paid them at all. Ex-staff stated to Politico that the “agency had a dangerous workplace atmosphere that generated needless anxiety and promoted doubt amongst employees.”
