In a radio interview, Rep. Chip Roy, a Republican lawmaker, expressed his support for slowing down any humanitarian aid to Gaza. Comparing Palestinian civilians to Nazis, he said that it is not “our job to be sending money over to folks shooting missiles towards the Knesset.” This remark was made in reference to the ongoing Israeli airstrikes and ground invasion of Gaza, which have left more than 8,000 people dead, over a million displaced, and the majority of them without access to their basic necessities. On Wednesday, Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.) gave a speech in the House of Representatives about the Hamas International Financing Prevention Act. This bill would allow the US to impose sanctions against any country giving money to militant organizations like Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The bill used to allow relief to Gaza civilians unencumbered, but Representative Mast changed the clause and necessitated a waiver from President Biden for such aid to be given. Mast expressed, “I am appealing to those on the other side to not so casually refer to innocent Palestinian civilians.” I don’t consider it appropriate to carelessly refer to Nazi civilians as ‘innocent’ during World War II. I suggest that we do not underestimate the idea of civilians from Palestine being innocent. We ought not to use the phrase “innocent Nazi civilians” so casually.
